At the 2011 New York and London Fashion Week, designers sent their models down the runway wearing couture inspired by my favorite decade – the 60′s! Tis the season for color-blocked dresses, peacoats, and thigh-high skirts. Of course, not everyone feels comfortable wearing these incredibly short frocks. Nonetheless, there’s a bit of vintage, mod-inspired fashion happening right now. And we’ll be seeing a lot more in 2012!
So, for those of you who aren’t totally comfortable channeling Twiggy, you can still look mod-fabulous! And no one channels the 60′s better than Zooey Deschanel.
THE TUNIC: This long top is nothing new to the fashion world. In fact, Forever 21 is usually crawling with tunics. This is the top that can be worn with or without bottoms. So if you’re self-conscious about flaunting those stems, you always have the option to pair with pants, jeans, leggings, or stockings. This particular tunic (left) has that vintage look. THE PEACOAT: This coat never goes out of style. There’s something smart and sophisticated about this type of outterwear; most likely it’s because of how it’s tailored. And even though it represents that sort of 60′s flare, this type of coat is extremely versatile. Wear it to work with a pair of dress slacks. Or combine it with a pair of jeans and a newsboy cap. My favorite peacoats can be found at The Gap.
THE BOOT: Remember Jane Fonda in Barbarella? She ran around with a laser gun, wearing thigh-high boots. In 2010, we started seeing more and more of the thigh-high boot, either worn with short dresses or over jeans and leggings. This is the type of accessory that will “wow” an outfit. You could literally throw on a pair of skinny jeans, a grey v-neck tee, and finish the look with thigh-high boots. You can’t go wrong!
HATS, SCARVES & OTHER PRETTY THINGS: And of course, if you’re not ready for thigh-high boots and short tunics, you can always draw your 60′s inspiration through accessorizing. Etsy.com is a great place to shop vintage. This 60′s glamour hat reminds me of Nicole Ritchie. Pair it with a long dress for hippie-chic style. Jackie O set the trend for large, round sunglasses. Often, you’ll spot celebrities hiding from the paparazzi in these spectacles. Urban Outfitters has an amazing selection of 60′s-inspired sunglasses right now. Bigger is better!
